Estonian Cell’s aspen pulp mill launched production in 2006. With about EUR 153 million, the facility boasts one of the biggest foreign greenfield investments made in Estonia over the course of the last decade. By 2015 the total value of the investments has exceeded EUR 175 million.
Estonian Cell is the Europe’s largest producer of aspen Bleached-Chemi-Thermo-Mechanical Pulp (BCTMP), exporting about 80% of its output to Europe and 20% to Asia.
The pulp mill employs the most environmentally friendly and the Best Available Technologyfor Aspen BCTMP. From day one the company has implemented innovative technology to boost the capacity of its single baling line and improve availability in continuous shift production.
In 2014 Estonian Cell was awarded the winner of the “The Environmentally Friendly Company” and “The Environmentally Friendly Production Process of the Year 2014” The company received the awards mainly for its 11 million euro innovative wastewater pre-treatment and biogasproduction plant that resulted in the company becoming the largest biogas producer and consumer in Estonia. The new biogas plant features also a state-of-the-art technology, providing an innovative solution in the context of pulp production. The plant has the largest single biogas reactor in Europe.
Estonian Cells exports 100% of its production worth about EUR 70 million per annum. The company employs 85 people directly and generates work for around 500 employees within its value chain.
Due to fully automated production process the pulp mill can be characterised by one of the highest productivity in Estonian Industrial Sector, the sales per employee is exceeding EUR 800,000 per annum.
